Samohi Men's Volleyball on a Roll

Story and Photo byDave Quick, Reporter-at-Large

Samohi Volleyball Coach Liane Sato with varsity setter Fred McLafferty. McLafferty was first team all-league last year and is one four returning starters on this year’s squad. The 2006 Vikings are undefeated in league play midway through the season.
The Viking men's varsity volleyball are undefeated in league play at the midpoint in the 2006 season and prospects are bright for a run at the CIF championship on the heels of 2005 when they advanced in post season play to within one match of the title. Under the direction of head coach Liane Sato, the Vikings have already defeated their top league contenders including Beverly Hills, Torrance and North Torrance.

Viking starters include Fred McLafferty, Michael Campbell, Neil Cline, True Shields, Willie Goetz with Bronson Oliviera playing back row and rotating with Ari Feldman who plays in the front row. The team is rich in depth. Additional varsity include Greg Wilson, David Kim, Richard Wong, Alex Bon, Moosa Glickman, Nick Leonard, David Farzam and Alex Silver. Setter Fred McLafferty and Michael Campbell are co-captains.

Neil Cline and Bronson Oliviera are the team's most consistent passers. Junior Michael Campbell is having a "break out year" averaging 10 kills per game, four aces per game, and three solo blocks per game, which places Campbell at the very top of the league in all three categories.
