Santa Monica Firm To Give Away As Many as One Million Computers

FreeMac Inc, based in Santa Monica, has announced that it plans to give away as many as 1 million Apple Computer iMac personal computers.
In exchange for a free computer, people must sign on for three years of Internet service with EarthLink at $19.95 a month and submit to a demographic profile so that advertisements can be targeted to them. They will also be assigned a First USA-FreeMac credit card.
FreeMacs machines will feature custom advertising and the company will set up a community Website where users can build sites, set up e-commerce shops, receive e-mail and see ads.
Jonathan Strum, who founded FreeMac two months ago, said, We want the cool factor of the iMac to transfer over to the community.
People who are interested in being given one of the iMacs, which will be distributed in the fall, can submit their e-mail addresses at freemac.com. They will be informed when applications are being accepted.
FreeMac is acquiring the machines through Ingram Micro Inc. Apple Computer is aware of the program, but not involved in it.
