City Of Santa Monica To Promote Healthier, Safer Nail Salons

The City of Santa Monica has partnered with the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative to implement the Santa Monica Healthy Nail Salon Recognition Program, a program that’s part of a growing trend to make nail salons in California healthier and safer.

On a daily basis, for long hours, nail salon owners and workers handle solvents, glues, polishes and other beauty care products containing a multitude of chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer, allergies, respiratory, neurological and reproductive harm.

Santa Monica is joining San Francisco and Alameda County in the growing movement to use recognition programs to promote healthier and safer nail salon environments for workers, owners, and consumers.

Nail Salons that join in the voluntary program will receive formal recognition with a certificate, window sticker and by being listed on the Santa Monica Green Business website.

The California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative surveyed more than 400 consumers on the Third Street Promenade and found that roughly 80 percent support a city program that calls on nail salons to use less toxic products and 95 percent would be more likely to go to a less toxic salon than one that is not.
