"Lucy" Tops Weekend Box Office With $44 Million In Sales

"Lucy'' won the herculean battle of the Hollywood box office this weekend, decisively acing out "Hercules.''

"Lucy'' debuted with a $44 million gate this weekend, edging out ``Hercules'' and its $29 million premiere, according to studio estimates gathered by industry analysts at Rentrak.

In its third week of exhibition, "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes'' was in third place, with $16.4 million in weekend sales estimated. About $172.1 million has been taken in domestically for that franchise reboot.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the U.S. and Canada this weekend were "The Purge: Anarchy'' ($9.8 million), "Planes: Fire and Rescue'' ($9.3 million), "Sex Tape'' ($6 million), "Transformers: Age Of Distinction'' ($4.6 million), "And So It Goes'' (debuting at $4.6 million), "Tammy'' ($3.4 million) and "A Most Wanted Man'' ($2.7 million).
