Bail was set at $20,000 on Saturday, July 13 for a 30-year-old man who urinated near the Third Street Promenade then resisted arrest and attacked a police officer.

At 4:48 pm officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were on a routine patrol in the downtown area of Santa Monica when they chanced upon a man who was in the process of urinating in a breezeway on the 1300 block of the Third Street Promenade.

The officers asked this man why he had not simply availed himself of the toilet facilities located a mere 50 feet away, to which he replied, “I had to go!”

The officers further requested that this man inform them of his date of birth and name, however he refused to give either.

The man then became rather agitated and attempted to run away.

The officers yelled at him to “stop” but he did not and continued to walk towards an alley.

A number of officers then approached this man from behind and attempted to detain this man but he struggled vigorously and in the process attempted to kick one of the officers.

The officers, as is invariably the case, prevailed and the man was placed into handcuffs.

This man of no fixed abode, was charged with urinating in public, resisting arrest, and battery upon a police officer.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
