Santa Monica College Hosts Authors Stephen D. Gutierrez, Jim Krusoe:

Santa Monica College has announced that award-winning authors Stephen D. Gutierrez and Jim Krusoe will read and talk about selections from their works at 11:15 am Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The free event – “Turf Crossing & Fence Climbing: Stories from LA, Fresno, and Guanajuato” – is open to the public and will be held in Humanities & Social Science Lecture Hall 165 on the main SMC campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Seating is on a first-arrival basis.

Stephen D. Gutierrez is a Professor in the English Department at California State University, East Bay. His latest book, “The Mexican Man in His Backyard,” completes a stories-and-essays trilogy he calls “My Three-Volume BOXED Set” (“Elements,” winner of FC2’s Nilon Award, and “Live from Fresno y Los,” winner of an American Book Award, are the first two in the “set”). He is also a playwright whose “Game Day” received the 2010 Maxim Mazumdar New Play Competition in the One-Act Category Award.

Jim Krusoe is an SMC English instructor and the award-winning author of the novel “Iceland,” selected by the Los Angeles Times and the Austin Chronicle as one of the ten best fiction books of 2002. He also penned the short story collection “Blood Lake” and the novels “Girl Factory,” “Erased,” and “Toward You.” Krusoe – who is the founder of SMC’s literary journal Santa Monica Review – is a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Fund, and also teaches in the graduate writing program at Antioch University.

“Turf Crossing & Fence Climbing” is sponsored by the SMC Associates (www.smc.edu/associates), the SMC Latino Center and its Adelante Program, and the SMC English Department. For information, call 310.434.4003.
