“Straight Outta Compton” and “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” were the number one and two movies in North America again this weekend, as two new releases opened behind them.
“Straight Outta Compton,” an airbrushed version of West Coast Rap’s emergence, was on track to sell $26.8 million in tickets this weekend, for a two-week total of $111.5 million in receipts.
And the “Mission: Impossible” redux was predicted to deal $11.7 million in this weekend of exhibition, its fourth. Its total will hit $157.8 million at the end of the night, according to studio estimates gathered by Rentrak.
Debuting in third place was “Sinister 2” at $10.6 million, followed by the fourth place premiere of “Hitman: Agent 47” at $8.2 million.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films this weekend in the United States and Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by industry analysts at Rentrak, were “Man From U.N.C.L.E.” ($7.4 million), “American Ultra” (debuting at $5.5 million), “The Gift” ($4.3 million), “Ant-Man” ($4 million), “Minions” ($3.7 million) and “Fantastic Four” ($3.7 million).
