Ocean Park Boulevard Bike Lanes Welcome: Letter To The Editor

Posted Sep. 1, 2012, 11:00 pm

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

I just wanted to give my public thanks to the City of Santa Monica for their continued effort to make life safer for all its bicyclists. 14th Street and Ocean Park Blvd. bike lanes have been completed and are very welcome. Where cars park along the curb the bike lane has been made wide enough that, if someone suddenly opening their car door, it won't send you sprawling on the pavement as long as you're riding toward the outside of the bike lane.

Thanks and all of us bike riders look forward to more of the same in the future.

Mike Kilgore

Happy Bicyclist

Dear Bicyclists, I'm glad the City of Santa Monica is making the streets safer for you, but PLEASE follow the law and rules of the road!!! This means STOP at the stop signs and RED LIGHTS!!!!!

The bike lanes may make it safer and easier for bicyclists but I travel Ocean Park every day and have never seen a bicyclist. The environmental cost is high (slowed car traffic wasting gas and spewing fumes) not to mention the extra stress on motorists. The city is trying to force people out of their cars. It doesn't work, it just slows the traffic. The self-centered hubris of bicyclists such as the writer insults the common good.

The council members heads are obviously somewhere other than in chambers. What these bike paths have contributed to gridlock is unfathomable. It takes twice as long to get anywhere and besides the bike paths have just given the bikers a green light to continue to not observe traffic laws. What is it going to take for them to obey the traffic laws, more injuries and even deaths..

Self-centered hubris! Ouch. And redundant. If you've "never seen a bicyclist" on OP, why are you name-calling?

While the mother side of me is happy for more bike lanes, the commuter side of me, who has to get back and forth to work far outside of Santa Monica is not so happy--the gridlock all along Ocean Park is getting worse and worse--leaving us all who have to be in cars wasting gas while idling, feeling frustrated. Before you respond 'get an electric car,' not all of us can afford to do so. A single lane on most of OP is just not adequate for the traffic, whether from SMC or from commuters.

I thought the bike lanes were going to be painted green, which I felt was a very good way to provide visual delineation which would mark it a bike lane. I often commute via Ocean Park Blvd and am very pleased with our Bike friendly City. ... In response to the gridlock comments below I too would like to see less traffic, however the Bike lanes also provides improved safety for needed street parking. Imagine our beautiful City without Cars

Ocean Park used to be a smooth moving street 95 percent of the time....A few Consultant Studies later and we have the New Ocean Park...Slower all the time, brutal very often.....and how much did all this fun cost.....over 6 figs....the SM leadership is the real issue.....bad decisions over and over.
