Samohi’s Baseball Team Keep it Rolling: Vikings undefeated in Ocean League

The Santa Monica High School baseball team is one of the best squads in the CIF Southern Section Division III bracket. In fact, Samohi is the second ranked team in their division. The Vikings, with an overall mark of 20-4 before they take on Morningside High School for a home game on May 1, have pretty much dominated the competition all year long.

The Vikings have played 12 games at home, winning 10. Samohi’s record on the road is just good, winning nine of the 11 games they’ve played away. That’s pretty impressive stuff for the Ocean League leader. Samohi is undefeated through six games in Ocean League play.

The Vikings have won their last six games, including beating Oaks Christian 10-8 in the Redondo Tournament on Saturday, April 26. The Vikings also breezed past Morningside, 20-0, on April 29. After scoring four runs in the first two innings against Oaks Christian, Samohi had to come from behind to win the nonleague game, scoring three runs in the top half of the seventh inning to briefly regain the lead.

Oaks Christian, which put up five runs in the bottom of the third inning, tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a run. Samohi responded, scoring two runs in the eighth inning to prevail with the win. The Vikings have won eight of their last nine games. During that span, the Samohi baseball team has produced 86 runs against their opponents.

As a team, Samohi is batting nearly at a .400 clip, actually going for .392 as a squad. On the hitting side of things, Samohi has an extremely productive offensive season, thanks to the play of Freddie Norris (29 hits, .403 batting average), Matt Kassowitz (29 hits, .468 batting average), Rudy Olmedo (28 hits, .444 Batting average) and Gary Dixon (26 hits, .448 batting average).
