The St. Monica boys’ basketball team began the week on a positive note, defeating Camino Real League rival St. Paul, 74-38 on Wednesday. The week concluded with a not so happy ending as the Mariners fell to Cathedral, 87-44. The loss drops St. Monica to a 14-10 mark overall and a 5-3 league record.
Cathedral (19-2, 8-0) wrested control of the game in the second quarter where it outscored St. Monica 19-3. St. Monica responded with a 17-point third quarter, but the Phantoms came back with 25 points to seal the victory.
Spencer Gorman tallied a team-high 15 points while Dennis Ashley added 12 points for the Mariners in the defeat.
Gorman was the point man for the Mariners in the win against St. Paul, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Ashley, who have been on fire recently with his hot shooting, added 13 points and four rebounds for the Mariners. Junior Jabari Miles made a solid contribution, pouring 11 points and handing out four assists.
Before going up against Cathedral, the Mariners had put together a two-game win streak. St. Monica handed Bosco Tech a 57-43 defeat prior to beating St. Paul, Jan. 31.
Up by just one point going into the fourth quarter, St. Monica opened up in the final period to seal the victory. With Gorman missing the game, Ashley stepped up his play and led the team with 23 points and four assists. Henock Teferi had 13 points and eight rebounds. Kavin Dotson added 11 points.
