It was a tough day at the office for the St. Monica Mariners last Saturday night. The Mariners went up against one of the better teams they will face this season and came out on the short end of the stick of that encounter, falling to the Carpinteria Warriors, 38-7 in a non league game.

The loss gave St. Monica (2-4, 0-1) its fourth defeat of the season. The Mariners hope to improve on that mark when they take on Bellarmine-Jefferson (0-3) in a Santa Fe League matchup this Saturday in Burbank.

After clipping Palm Desert’s Xavier Prep last week, the Mariners found themselves within striking distance at halftime, only trailing the Warriors 17-0 at intermission.

The bottom fell for St. Monica in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, when Carpinteria closed out the game with a 14-0 spurt in the final period.  St. Monica surrendered 325 yards in total yards for the game, but the bulk of the damage the Warriors did was on the ground where they rushed for 237 yards.

Ironically, despite the yardage gained, Carpinteria only managed 13 first downs for the entire game. St. Monica registered 14 first downs. The Mariners have given up 157 points this season, while managing to score 138 points on the year for themselves.

Despite the loss, St. Monica is still ranked 13th in the Southern Section Division Northeast XIII class.
