St. Monica Tournament A Blast For Local Basketball Teams

Mariners compete in own tournament.

The St. Monica Tournament was a showcase of some of the local basketball teams, including putting the Mariners’ hoopsters on display. The Mariners lost two of the first three games they played in, dropping contests to Newbury Park and University.

St. Monica was able to mount a successful and winning effort against New Designs Charter for its second win of the season, but fell to University, 74-66, on Wednesday.

In the first day of the tournament, St. Monica fell to Newbury Park 72-51. Newbury Park was led by Tyler Cartaino with 21 points and Kevin Russell with 18 points. St. Monica was led by Kavin Dotson with 20 points. Newbury Park led at halftime 35-28 and were up by 12 in the third quarter, but St. Monica pulled within two to make it 42-40 with three minutes left in the quarter.

Newbury Park rallied back and went on a 20-2 run stretching it into the 4th quarter, putting the game away. St. Monica went stone cold from the field while Kevin Russell hit back to back 3’s and Tyler Cartaino hit two big buckets in a row. 

Kavin Dotson didn’t get any offensive help as the Mariners as a whole shot under 30 percent in their home debut.The Mariners rebounded from that defeat by handling New Designs Charter with ease, cruising to a 83-27 win on the second day of the tournament.

St. Monica was led by Spencer Gorman with 14 points and Kaivon Simab with 13 to pace the Mariners. New Designs Charter was led by Randon Nevels with 13 points and Alex Alvarado had 8.

Day 1 of the St. Monica Tournament

Hamilton 64 - Hawthorne 48

Hamilton was led by Evan Burton with 19 points and Justin Griffin 18 points.

Hawthorne was led by Marion Towns with 18 points and Brian Ross with 14 points. 

Hamilton led 33-26 at halftime.  

University 107 - New Designs Charter 38

University had seven players score in double figures. Vilash Singh and Caleb La Anyane with 13 points, led the way for University.

New Designs Charter was led by Randon Nevels with 15 points.

Oak Park 65 - Verbum Dei 48

Oak Park was led by Michael Alvarez with 18 points and Cole Micek with 19 points.

Verbum Dei was led by Nick Spates with 17 points and Jabril Frazier with 12 points. Oak Park led 27-17 at the half.

Tyler Cartiano of Newbury Park lit up the gym against University for 28 points.

New Designs Charter is down a few starters besides being a small school so they are having a real tough time. Michael Alvarez and Cole Micek each scored 22 points for Oak Park.

Micek hit 4 3-pointers. The first place game featured Oak Park going up against Newbury Park Thursday night. Verbum Dei and Hamilton battled each other, while University and St. Monica took the floor on the last day of the tournament.

Day 2 of the St. Monica Tournament

Newbury Park 55 - University 50

Newbury Park was led by Tyler Cartiano with 28 and Sam Jennings with 10

University was led by Tre Weston with 16 and Darnell Bettis and Nick Brooks each had 11 points.

Newbury Park was up at the half 30-20.

Verbum Dei 63 - Hawthorne 41

Verbum Dei was led by Nick Spates with 19 and Timmothy Roberts and Jabril Frazier each had 10 points. Hawthorne was led by Brian Ross with 17 and Sharod Bohanon with 11 points.

Verbum Dei led at the half 38-20.

Oak Park 54 - Hamilton 30

Oak Park was led by Michael Alvarez and Cole Micek. Both players scored 22 points.

Hamilton was led by Britton Cummings with seven points. 

Oak Park led 28-14 at half.
