Santa Monica's Two-Year, $1 Billion Budget Approved

Santa Monica officially has a budget for the next two years. Total price tag: $1,055,100,000. Council members approved Tuesday night a Biennial Budget allocating $525.7 million in spending for the 2013-14 fiscal year and another $529.4 million the next year.

The Santa Monica Public Library at 601 Santa Monica Boulevard may soon charge $25 annually for non-residents to access library materials and services.

Non-Residents May Pay For Santa Monica Library Use

The Santa Monica Public Library (SMPL) may no longer be free to use for those who live beyond the city limits. When Greg Mullen, the City’s Library Services director, presented his budget to Council members during the May 28 Biennial Budget study session, he said some new fees would have to be assessed in order to reduce the impact of the Library’s budget on the General Fund.

As the Santa Monica City Council last week endured consecutive days of budgetary hearings as part of its study session reviewing the fiscal outlook of the coastal municipality, one theme was readily apparent from the outset: troubled times might be around the bend and healthcare, pensions, and redevelopment are the culprits.

The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium is one of the victims of the loss of state redevelopment funds. The absence of RDA funds in the upcoming budget is a contributing factor in the City of Santa Monica’s bleak fiscal outlook.
