When Mr. Santa Monica writes, I read. So, when Nat Trives took the time to send me a note, I paid attention. I had long known that New Roads School is one of Santa Monica’s premiere educational facilities. What Nat told me is that New Roads is now part of our city’s cultural assets.

Inspired by the works of his Academy Award-winning father, Ed Begley, Jr. became an actor. He first came to audiences’ attention for his portrayal of Dr. Victor Ehrlich on the long-running hit television series “St. Elsewhere,” for which he received six Emmy nominations. Since then, Ed has moved easily among feature, television, and theater projects.

Earlier this week, City Council members talked about saving money for a rainy day. Clearly they were not referring to the wet weather that welcomed the Santa Monica State of the City held Thursday morning at the SGI USA Center. Yet planning for the future was definitely a topic of discussion among the event’s speakers and nearly 300 attendees.

A new trend appears to be occurring in Santa Monica each January: a hip new phrase or concept is coined at the annual State of the City event, which returns Jan. 24 to the World Culture Center.

Longtime City Councilwoman Pam O’Connor was appointed to serve her fourth term as Santa Monica Mayor at the last City Council meeting of 2012. O’Connor has served on the Santa Monica City Council since 1994 with her special interests being transportation and environmental sustainability.
