Former L.A. Deputy Mayor for Budget and Innovation Rick Cole began his tenure as Santa Monica City Manager on June 29, replacing Rod Gould who retired in January.

Santa Monica City Manager Rick Cole may have one of the most challenging city management positions in California, responsible for the day-to-day administration of the City of Santa Monica, which includes implementation of City Council ordinances and policies, oversight of 14 departments, and an annual budget of $564 million.

The search for a new Santa Monica City Manager ended Wednesday night when Mayor Kevin McKeown announced that City Council had unanimously selected Rick Cole for the position.

As Santa Monica City Manager Rod Gould retires from his position today, Assistant City Manager Elaine Polachek will have her salary bumped up to $27,452 a month to act as Interim City Manager to keep Gould’s chair warm until a new city manager is appointed. Council has also handed over $50,000 to a private firm to find his replacement. They are producing a brochure.

Santa Monica Assistant City Manager Elaine Polachek will assume the position of interim City Manager on Feb. 1, 2015 to fill the shoes left by Rod Gould who is retiring at the end of January.

There will be at least one new face on the Council dais soon after the calendar flips to 2015, as Rod Gould announced late last Friday he is retiring from his post of City Manager at the end of January after five years of service.
