The road back to glory is usually a hard one to navigate. The Santa Monica boys’ basketball team is learning that lesson. A year removed from being crowned as kings of CIF Southern Section Division 1, Samohi has found out that it is much more difficult to be the hunted as oppose to being the ones doing the hunting.

It was the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and two outs. The Santa Monica Vikings (20-10, 10-0) needed just one more out to cap off another victory and clinch their spot in the CIF playoffs against rival Culver City (18-6, 8-2), and the Vikings did just that winning the game 7-4 at home Thursday afternoon. Entering the final inning, the Vikings had held a comfortable 7-2 lead needing only three outs to complete their perfect record within league play. But with sophomore Andrew Brown on the mound for the final inning, things quickly started to take a turn for the worse and the Vikings slowly saw their lead shrink away.

It was the top of the third inning and the St. Monica (4-7) softball team was down 5-3 against Culver City (3-7) when Mariners Veronica Navarro bested Centaurs pitcher Jessica Faber by slapping an inside the park home run to make the game 5-4 at Veterans Memorial Park in Culver City Wednesday afternoon. Mariners Aliza Chacon got on base with a line drive grounder soon after and cautiously made her way to third base before she was hit in by Mariners Alyssa Gutierrez to tie the game 5-5. But that was as close as the Mariners would get to winning the game against the Centaurs who won the game 11-6.

The Santa Monica High School (5-3) football team has been waiting for a leader to step up, and it took until the second half against league rival Culver City (4-4) for quarterback Ryan Barbarin to take the initiative and lead his offense to a Viking victory Friday night.

Even without star setter Blossom Sato, the Santa Monica Vikings (3-0) volleyball team pulled off a win against rival Culver City (8-10) in three tight sets 25-22, 25-14, and 27-25 showing off a kill factory that will only add muscle and confidence to their season.
