St. Monica High School football program has a new coach. Well, sort of. Drew Shaw, a math teacher at the school, is now carrying top billing as head football coach at the school. Shaw replaced Adam Guerra, who moved on to coach another program.

Eleven Santa Monica youth football players became violently ill on Friday while in Las Vegas for the National Youth Football Championships.

It was a good run for the Santa Monica High School football team. Coach Travis Clark had his team in position to contend for the Ocean League title, which they fell just short. The Vikings earned a berth into the postseason after finishing second in the Ocean League, losing only to eventual league champs Culver City in overtime.

The St. Monica football had its season end in the first round of the CIF playoffs, falling to defending champ Rio Honda Prep, by the score of 62-28.

Coming off back-to-back shutouts to end the regular season, the Santa Monica Vikings (7-4) defense delivered another stellar performance Friday night to start the first round of play in the CIF Southern Section Western Division playoffs.

The Pop Warner Pee Wee Westside Vikings had one game to go before they reached the finals of the Pop Warner West Coast Championship to be played this weekend. The Vikings fell short of their goal, losing to the Arizona Nighthawks in the second round of the Pop Warner West Coast Championship.

This much is true about the Santa Monica High football team: win or go home. That’s pretty much the mantra for every team now engaged in the playoffs. The first season is officially over. Now the real fun begins for the Vikings.

At this time of year everything goes. Teams and individuals go up for league championships, hoping to get an extension to their season by getting an invite to the postseason. St. Monica is in that boat with its football team squeezing into the playoffs this week.

The St. Monica football team is still considered to be a Top 15 team in the CIF Southern Section Northeast (XIII) Division. As of right now, the Mariners are the 14th ranked team in their division with their final game coming up against powerful Salesian on Thursday night.

It’s been a tough season for the St. Monica football team. Friday night against Santa Fe League foe St. Anthony, the Mariners saw their tough luck season magnified at Santa Monica College. St. Monica scored 27 first half points and still would up on the short end of the stick, going down in defeat to St. Anthony, 33-27.

Samohi fell behind early, rallied late, but ultimately lost to Culver City 17-14 in overtime. The Vikings fell down 14-0 at halftime. But in the second half it was a different story. Led by the inspired rushing attack of running back Kwame Duggins, Samohi squad fought back to tie the ballgame with just over 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

This wasn’t a fair matchup for the Beverly Hills High School football team. The Santa Monica Vikings proved to be too fast, too big and too much for Beverly Hills to handle in their Ocean League contest last Friday night.

The Mariners are still keeping it rolling. St. Monica's football team continued its season-long stellar play, steamrolling past Bellarmine-Jefferson 36-0 for an easy road win. The victory was the first of the season for the Mariners in Santa Fe League play.

Homecoming is always supposed to be a sweet thing for the home team. Well, at least it is supposed to be. The Santa Monica High football team got a chance to savor the sweet taste of a 42-6 over Inglewood Morningside in the team’s Ocean League opener on Friday night.

Los Angeles-Windward defensive back Drew Bryant picked off two passes for interceptions against Kilpatrick. Bryant’s 62-yard interception return for a touchdown with five seconds remaining before halftime was the play that put the dagger in any chance that Kilpatrick might have had in defeating the home team.

It was a tough day at the office for the St. Monica Mariners last Saturday night. The Mariners went up against one of the better teams they will face this season and came out on the short end of the stick of that encounter, falling to the Carpinteria Warriors, 38-7 in a non league game.

Arizona State University Online recognized Santa Monica-based online student Jamie Boggs Saturday as she received an honorary game ball from mascot Sparky the Sun Devil just before kickoff at the ASU versus USC game at Sun Devil Stadium.

Santa Monica College football team goes down in defeat to San Bernardino, 41-21, thanks in large part to turning the ball over four times to the visiting team. San Bernardino's offense overwhelmed the Corsairs' defense, jumping out to a three score lead in the first half.
