While some might swear by sudoku or word puzzles, there’s evidence that something much more near and dear to our hearts could help prevent cognitive decline: photography. In a study published in Psychological Science, a group of senior citizens who took a three-month photography course saw a significant increase across a number of mental tasks.

My good friend Sarah and I went to lunch and shopping in Beverly Hills this past weekend. After a glass of champagne and a chicken Caesar salad at Barney’s, we made our way down to the lower level of the store to check out the massive, new cosmetics and fragrance department.

My friend Grace Cheng Braun sent me some information earlier this week about how her organization WISE & Healthy Aging is offering free memory screenings. It’s in conjunction with National Memory Screening Day on Nov. 19.

Last week I managed an interesting edu-tainment event for a client of mine, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Held at sexy downtown restaurant LeKa (owners of Wokcano restaurants), we combined a gourmet food and wine pairing with a pair of breast cancer surgeons. The docs were there to hold “dinner table” conversation with some of the most influential women who work and/or live in the downtown area.

My friend Nancy and I had a closet-cleaning event recently. MY closet. It was a riot. We drank champagne, and laughed our asses off while doing it. My closet is so full, I do not have room for one more thing, but I end up wearing the same seven to eight items. So what else was in there? Stuff from 1988 through 2013. Of course, there was a story with each era.

Apparently sex sells. My recent Hot Flash column titled “The Power of the Blowjob” was featured on the Jay Leno Show last Monday. There we were, my associate Dienna D’Olimpio and I on international TV. What fun.

I have a love/hate relationship with Las Vegas. Top things I hate: Gambling. Drinking. Staying out late. Walking at least half a mile to the guest elevators, and at least a mile to anywhere else. Floozy-looking women trying to walk in high, high heels. The overweight tourist with his pants hanging down so low you can see his butt crack. Smoke-filled rooms.

I woke up with a bad cold today. Maybe it was because in the last two weeks, I got an average of six hours of sleep a night, partied every night the first week with friends in Chicago, and when I got back, worked an average of 15 hours a day to catch up, ate like crap, and to top it off, managed a grand opening event for a client in their emergency room – disease central!

So, I am tired of spending thousands of dollars a year looking “younger than 50.” Over the past year, I purchased four different eye creams (one was $400) and they all have worked really well, or at least I thought so. Over the past year, I acquired several different facial moisturizers – one for day, one for night, one for summer, one for winter, one for when my face is drier than usual, one for when my face is more oily. Damn that Barney’s cosmetics counter! They sure know how to sell their product.

My beloved kitty, Humphrey, died a couple of weeks ago. I cried all night long and all day long. My eyes were puffy and red and I was exhausted. I worked that whole day. Most sane people would have gone right to bed after work, but my friends talked me into going to a yoga class.

Who doesn’t want to look seven years younger with or without surgery? I am not against a little nip and tuck here and there, but the majority of face-lifts in Los Angeles scare the crap out of me.

I love animals. I mean love, love, love animals. Sometimes more than most people. I have decided to get a dog. I have had cats in the past, and still have my Persian Humphrey, whom I dearly love. But I always wanted a dog. I told my resistant husband that getting a dog is a great way to improve the quality your of life, feel better, and look younger (he went for it!).

In the last few months, my husband has been more irritable than usual. Surely the reasons can’t be because I sometimes don’t change the empty roll of toilet paper, or turn the lights off when I leave the room, or forget to load the dishwasher, or don’t have time to put the wet laundry in the dryer.

A moving bus is not a sound that heals. A horn blowing from a car is not a sound that heals. A jackhammer in the middle of the afternoon when you’re trying to write a story for the Santa Monica Mirror is most definitely not a sound that heals. But certain sounds do heal, as I found out a few weeks ago.

A few weeks ago, I met with an interesting potential client, Adam – a chiropractor, healer, and book author. He also did not eat meat, and ate only raw and/or organic food.

I have a herniated disk towards the end of my spine, what the medical experts call L5. It hurts every day. I’ve been to a surgeon. After much discussion, I asked him if he were me, would he do surgery? He answered with a resounding no. That answered my question about surgery as an option. And, I do not want to be injected with cortisone. My grandmother used the stuff, and it literally killed her.

It’s summer – and to look and feel sexy at any age during warmer weather, especially for women over 50, I conducted a survey of a combination of experts and women over 50 to learn their sexy summer secrets.

Sunday 7 am. I woke up, went downstairs, and made some coffee. I took a shower, put on my white bathrobe, read the paper, and drank my coffee. My husband woke up half an hour later, got into his cycling clothes and left for several hours. ‘Bye, honey!

Once every six months, (summer and fall) my friend Sarah and I venture to Barney’s in Beverly Hills to work with the top New York runway makeup artists from Nars Cosmetics.

Face off – I’ve discovered it’s more than a hockey term. It’s what I experienced at my last facial, and I lived to tell the tale.

It’s summertime, and with the warm sun comes sexier clothes. One BIG mistake you can make is not shaving your legs, armpits, or waxing your bikini line – a total turn-off for men and women. It might be okay to let it go in the winter, but absolutely not in the summer!

In our 20s they were perky. In our 30s they still looked pretty darned good. In our 40s, they started to sag – a little. Now in our 50s, we could use some help. Not to worry, ladies.

Okay, ladies and gentlemen, it’s not what you think! This is a story on Dry Bars – a hair salon where all they offer is professional shampoos and blow jobs (as in blow dryer!).

Earlier this month, I woke up and looked in the mirror. Aaaaaahhh! I was turning into my Granny Annie – in the belly at least. Seemingly overnight! I turned 50, and wham! I didn’t even see it coming. I rushed to squeeze on Spanx. Oh-oh, even those were not helping!

Come-f--k-me-pumps, as they were called when I was in my 20s (those super-high-heels that we all squeezed our feet into and then hobbled across the dance floor to attract cute guys), were and still are a must-have staple for women in their 20s and 30s.
