Memorial Day at Woodlawn Cemetery:

On Monday, May 26, 2008, Santa Monica’s Woodlawn Cemetery is hosting the City’s 70th Annual Observance of Memorial Day, presented by a consortium of local charitable and service organizations. This year’s event will begin at 11a.m. and will feature patriotic music, including choirs from Lincoln Middle School and John Adams Middle School and the award-winning Fairfax High School marching band. Santa Monica Police Explorers will serve as the color guard for the event.

The keynote speaker of this year’s event will be U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Mark F. Heinrich, Director of Logistics Operations, which provides support to our military personnel currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. A military aircraft flyover is also planned.

Woodlawn Cemetery is located at 1847 14th Street in Santa Monica (located directly across Pico Boulevard from Santa Monica College). No vehicles will be allowed to park on the cemetery grounds due to the large number of attendees expected. However, convenient free parking for the event will be available in the parking structure of Santa Monica College at 1900 Pico Boulevard (16th Street and Pico Boulevard). Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus will provide free shuttle bus service from the parking structure to the cemetery and back. There is no charge for parking, shuttle bus, or admission to the observance.
