Santa Monica’s Recreation and Parks Commission will be honored today for being an outstanding recreation and parks commission for 2012 in California.

Palisades Garden Walk was renamed Tongva Park on Tuesday. Council members renamed Town Square as Ken Genser Square last October.

Indeed, Palisades Garden Walk is now a footnote in the history books as the newest public open space and recreation area in Santa Monica will be named Tongva Park.

Santa Monica Personal Trainers Create Coalition To Protest Fees, Regulations

Personal trainers may soon have to pay a fee to use Santa Monica’s public parks as a location for their fitness classes. In response, those trainers have banded together and created a coalition in hopes of preventing City Hall from enforcing fees or other regulations against them as they conduct training activities at local beaches and parks.

Santa Monica resident Gloria Keeling, 69, is recovering following a heavy fall Monday on this asphalt path at the  end of Idaho Avenue that leads down to a PCH overpass. Keeling said the accident wouldn’t have happened if personal trainers were banned from holding large group classes at Palisades Park.

Santa Monica's Town Square Will Be Renamed After Former Mayor Ken Genser

As construction begins on two civic parks in front of City Hall, council members earlier this month deliberated about what to ultimately call the areas currently known as Palisades Garden Walk (PGW) and Town Square. A decision was reached to rename Town Square after a public figure, while the verdict is still out on how best to uniquely identify PGW while also paying homage to Santa Monica’s history.

Universally Accessible Playground Construction To Cost $1 Million

An ambitious plan to bring the first-ever universally accessible playground to Santa Monica Beach is expected to carry a bill of $1 million, as council members voted Tuesday to move forward with the negotiation and execution of a construction contract to build the project in front of the Sea Colony condominium complex.

A French music holiday inspired Santa Monica to join in with other cities throughout Los Angeles County to celebrate Fête de la Musique on Summer Solstice. Music lovers from within the city and around the region trekked to Reed Park and the Annenberg Community Beach House last Thursday – the first official day of summer – to take part in the Make Music Los Angeles program.
