Teen Dream: Santa Monica YA Book Festival Debuts April 11

Santa Monica’s own literary version of Coachella, YALLWest, will make its debut as the city’s first Young Adult book festival on April 11 and 12.

Cody Williams was instantly paralyzed during a tackle playing football for Santa Monica High School in 2009. The now 21-year-old is going after a new kind of wheels other than his wheelchair: a pickup truck.

Cody Williams’ body tells his story better than anyone can. There’s the jagged spinal cord injury ribbon on his right bicep. Above that is a protruding Samoan warrior in a football helmet, wielding an axe. There’s the signature of his mother’s name, Stacy, and words like “Strength,” “No Days Off” and “What Doesn’t Kill Me Makes Me Stronger.”

Team Marine members Zoe Parcells, Martin Liu, and Kimberly Fuentes were awarded first place out of 16 teams in the Environmental Management category at the Los Angeles County Science Fair on Saturday and will now advance to the state fair.

Santa Monica High Students Win First Place At LA County Science Fair

Bending down to pick up a final cigarette butt on the side of the road, three Santa Monica High School students end an afternoon’s worth of cigarette counting and collection. Samohi Team Marine members Martin Liu, Kimberly Fuentes, and Zoe Parcells went through this ritual for one day a week for 16 weeks last year.

PCB Sampling Taking Place At Santa Monica & Olympic High Over Spring Break

Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has begun sampling building materials for PCBs at the technology building at Santa Monica High School, prior to planned demolition, and in all four buildings at Olympic High School, prior to planned renovation.

Kidney Failure Survivor, 15, Makes Santa Monica High Jr. Varsity Softball Team

After suffering in illness at the age of 12, Marisol Solano was suffering from Anca Glomerulonephritis (kidney failure) and had to go through three rounds of chemotherapy. She is now stable condition at the age of 15 and has made the Jr. Varsity Softball Team at Santa Monica High School.

About 160 professionals will share career insights with Santa Monica High School junior class (all 740 Samohi juniors) during 2015 Career Day today, March 17.

It's all business for the students of Regional Occupation Program’s Virtual Enterprise class at Santa Monica High School. In an innovative new venture, students developed a product line, made all management decisions including electing a chief executive officer and deciding a salary, and created a business plan to pitch at a simulated trade show in Long Beach, where they won first place.

Quarantine Ends For 14 Infants At Santa Monica High Day Care Following Measles

Fourteen infants who were exposed to a baby that was diagnosed with measles at a Santa Monica High School day care center will be allowed to return to the facility Monday, ending a 21-day incubation period to ensure they were not infected with the disease.

The 66th annual Stairway of Stars choir concert returns at Barnum Hall tonight. A band concert will be held Thursday, Feb. 12 while an orchestra concert will be held next Wednesday, Feb. 18.

A Santa Monica High School freshman baseball coach has been diagnosed with measles, but it is unlikely any of the coach’s players have caught the highly contagious virus, according to the Los Angeles Times.
