The Santa Monica College (SMC) student newspaper The Corsair won 15 awards – including newspaper General Excellence and four first place awards – at the 2015 Southern California conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) held at Fullerton College on Nov. 14.

Santa Monica College has awarded its third annual Chui L. Tsang Transfer Scholarship to SMC student Cinthia Magaña. The new Tsang Scholar – who has overcome extreme poverty, her undocumented status, and other adverse circumstances to pursue her education – will transfer this fall to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and will receive $15,000 for two years to complete her Bachelor’s Degree.

When Marilyn Perez-Garcia ended up in foster care at age 15, college seemed an unachievable dream. This fall, after three years at Santa Monica College — with the support of SMC’s Guardian Scholars program and her own hard work — she is headed to the University of California, Riverside on a full scholarship.

David B. Finkel, a former member of the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees, retired Superior Court judge and a one-time civil rights activist, has died, the college announced today. He was 83.

1989 marked the beginning of the end of apartheid in South Africa, and at Santa Monica College, other revolutionary things were happening. The idea of a special program was born, which would provide smaller classes taught by phenomenal instructors with a focus on African-American culture where possible.
