The popular Santa Monica College Holiday Student Art Sale will be held Dec. 11-13 in the Pete and Susan Barrett Gallery at the SMC Performing Arts Center.

SMC Presents Annual Holiday Art Sale This Friday Through Sunday, Dec. 11 - 13

Santa Monica College's 38th Annual Holiday Student Art Sale, featuring a wide range of works in various media, will be a three-day event again this year.

Santa Monica College (SMC) maintained its hold as California’s No. 1 community college in transfers to the University of California for the 25th straight year. SMC also topped in transfers to USC, Loyola Marymount University, and in combined transfers to the UC and California State University system. Cinthia Magaña (pictured) transferred to UCLA – the most popular UC destination for SMC students – this fall.

Santa Monica College Does It Again, Ranked No.1 Transfer College To UC System For 25th Year

Santa Monica College maintains its hold as California’s No. 1 community college in transferring students to the prestigious University of California (UC) system, for the 25th consecutive year.

Santa Monica College’s student newspaper The Corsair won 18 awards including newspaper General Excellence and four first place awards at the 2015 Southern California conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC). Corsair contributor Amanda Looma won first place in the online photo story category for her riveting audio slideshow of a 21-year-old homeless student.

The Santa Monica College (SMC) student newspaper The Corsair won 15 awards – including newspaper General Excellence and four first place awards – at the 2015 Southern California conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) held at Fullerton College on Nov. 14.

The Santa Monica College Board of Trustees appointed Kathryn E. Jeffery, PhD, as the new President of Santa Monica College. Jeffery is currently president at Sacramento City College and has over three decades of higher education experience.

The Santa Monica College Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday, Nov. 17 to appoint Kathryn E. Jeffery, PhD, as the new Superintendent and President of Santa Monica College (SMC).

Austin Beutner, recent publisher and CEO of the Los Angeles Times, will speak at the keynote event of the SMC Public Policy Institute’s Fall Forum on Monday, Nov 16 at 7 p.m. in The Broad Stage, SMC Performing Arts Center (1310 11th St., Santa Monica).

Austin Beutner, Joanne Heyler Announced As Keynote Speakers At SMC Public Policy Institute Fall Forum

The Santa Monica College Public Policy Institute (PPI) will present its Annual Fall Forum Nov 16-Dec 6. The theme for this year’s community forum is “The Ways Public Policy Sustains Creative Arts.”

Dr. Pedro Noguera – Distinguished Professor of Education at UCLA and one of the nation’s foremost experts on urban education – interacts with Santa Monica College professors at a workshop organized by the college’s Center for Teaching Excellence. The Center is funded by a federal grant for colleges like SMC that serve a large number of Hispanic/Latino students and works with faculty who teach basic skills, transfer and career technical education courses.

Frank R. Dawson has been appointed Associate Dean of Career and Technical Education for Santa Monica College. SMC is the leading job trainer in the Westside of Los Angeles and offers 110 degrees or certificates in career-oriented fields.

Santa Monica College has awarded its third annual Chui L. Tsang Transfer Scholarship to SMC student Cinthia Magaña. The new Tsang Scholar – who has overcome extreme poverty, her undocumented status, and other adverse circumstances to pursue her education – will transfer this fall to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and will receive $15,000 for two years to complete her Bachelor’s Degree.

Marilyn Perez-Garcia gets ready to celebrate her graduation from Santa Monica College. Perez-Garcia was a part of the Guardian Scholars program at SMC, which provides support services to foster youth, and is transferring to UC Riverside on a full scholarship.

When Marilyn Perez-Garcia ended up in foster care at age 15, college seemed an unachievable dream. This fall, after three years at Santa Monica College — with the support of SMC’s Guardian Scholars program and her own hard work — she is headed to the University of California, Riverside on a full scholarship.

David Finkel has died age 83. He was an attorney who served as a Judge at the Santa Monica Courthouse, a Rent Control Board Member, a City Councilmember and, most recently, a Santa Monica College Board of Trustees member.

David B. Finkel, a former member of the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees, retired Superior Court judge and a one-time civil rights activist, has died, the college announced today. He was 83.
