Dear Editor: Thanks to the district-wide fundraising by Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation (SMMEF), John Muir students and teachers have a breath of fresh air at our school: Classrooms are now staffed by Teacher and Aide; Teachers receive on-going professional training; and students receive specialized support in reading.

Lincoln Middle School Receives State's Highest Award For Academic Excellence

Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District was named this week as California Gold Ribbon School – the state’s highest award for academic excellence. Lincoln was selected for developing an innovative protocol that improves student writing by emphasizing teacher and parent collaboration, improved student feedback and providing targeted one-on-one conferences with students.

Underage Parties: Santa Monica Mock Party Saturday To Give Parents Glimpse

Local parents are invited to an event Saturday intended to educate about the current realities of underage drinking and drug use at house parties. Sponsored by the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) and City of Santa Monica and hosted by CLARE Foundation, the Westside Impact Project and Straight Up Reality Improv, in conjunction with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD), the #ItsTooEasy Reality Party is a mock high school party where parents and other adults will get a glimpse into what can really go on at underage get-togethers.

Citizen's Lawsuit Alleges PCB Contamination In Malibu Classrooms

A citizen's lawsuit filed today accuses Malibu school officials of violating the federal Toxic Substances Control Act by failing to decontaminate the city's combined elementary, middle and high school campuses of allegedly illegal levels of cancer-causing chemicals embedded in caulk and other building materials.

SMMUSD Students Drink More Alcohol, More Often, Than Other CA Students

The Westside Impact Project, an LA County-funded initiative started in 2013 to lower Santa Monica’s rates of underage drinking, said Tuesday latest data reveal gaps in the quantity and frequency of alcohol use among Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) students as compared to LAUSD students, as well as compared to other major California school districts, including Santa Barbara and San Francisco.

Santa Monica’s own school-based mental health program at the Child and Family Development Center called Youth Development Project has been serving the “at-risk” and “high-risk” youth in the community for the past 20 years.
