St. Monica Catholic Community will host its annual Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 26 for those who may be facing particular financial hardships this season or who may find themselves alone this holiday.

The fifth-grade class at St. Monica Catholic Elementary School gathered in their auditorium for a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, March 11 marking the completion of a 10-week D.A.R.E. program taught by Santa Monica police officer Austin Brown.

The St. Monica girls soccer team will be in the CIF southern section Division 7 semifinals after a 3-0 second round victory over Arroyo on Wednesday and a 2-1 quarterfinal win for them over Pasadena Marshall (16-7-2) on Friday.

The St. Monica boys' basketball team will play Crean Lutheran in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 4A playoffs. The Mariners will host Crean Lutheran, which plays out of the Academy League, this Wednesday.

The St. Monica basketball team face a stiff challenge for its postseason hopes. The Mariners are currently in third place in the Camino Real League. They end the season playing two of the best teams in the CIF Southern Section in Cathedral and Cantwell-Sacred Heart.

First grade students at Saint Monica Catholic Elementary School visited Santa Monica Fire Station #1 on Friday, Jan. 31 for the conclusion of the nationwide Catholic Schools Week.

St. Monica got off to a slow start of its basketball game against Palos Verdes on the first day of the El Segundo Tournament. A late rally fell short and the Mariners suffered a 52-51 defeat to Palos Verdes.

The St. Monica Tournament was a showcase of some of the local basketball teams, including putting the Mariners’ hoopsters on display. The Mariners lost two of the first three games they played in, dropping contests to Newbury Park and University.

While boys basketball is getting underway, hoopsters on the girls side have already been doing their thing on the hardwood. The St. Monica girls basketball team is not same squad is was a year ago when it boasted CIF Division 4A Player of the Year Briana Harris.

The St. Monica football had its season end in the first round of the CIF playoffs, falling to defending champ Rio Honda Prep, by the score of 62-28.

The St. Monica High School football team had a rough regular season. Hopefully, the postseason will be a bit kinder to the Mariners. After a season in which they finished last in the Santa Fe League, St. Monica found itself with an opportunity to play another game.

At this time of year everything goes. Teams and individuals go up for league championships, hoping to get an extension to their season by getting an invite to the postseason. St. Monica is in that boat with its football team squeezing into the playoffs this week.

The St. Monica football team is still considered to be a Top 15 team in the CIF Southern Section Northeast (XIII) Division. As of right now, the Mariners are the 14th ranked team in their division with their final game coming up against powerful Salesian on Thursday night.

It’s been a tough season for the St. Monica football team. Friday night against Santa Fe League foe St. Anthony, the Mariners saw their tough luck season magnified at Santa Monica College. St. Monica scored 27 first half points and still would up on the short end of the stick, going down in defeat to St. Anthony, 33-27.

After a nine-year planning process and more than five years of fundraising for construction of three new buildings and a parking garage, St. Monica Catholic Community will officially open their new facilities at 725 California Avenue on Sunday, Nov. 3.

It was a tough day at the office for the St. Monica Mariners last Saturday night. The Mariners went up against one of the better teams they will face this season and came out on the short end of the stick of that encounter, falling to the Carpinteria Warriors, 38-7 in a non league game.

Early in the second quarter St. Monica running back Jason Thomas had already scored his third touchdown of the game against Village Christian, but the Crusaders bounced back and pulled to within one touchdown at 29-21 by halftime at home Friday night. By the end of the game the score was 50-36 and the Crusaders were on top stopping Thomas in his tracks before he had a chance to gain yardage. St. Monica football head coach Adam Guerra said that the Mariners defense did not play a good game. "You score four rushing touchdowns and a special teams touchdown to get 36 points and then give up 50 points is just not acceptable," said Guerra. "Our defensive backs and linebackers have a lot of work to do."

The St. Monica Mariners will kick off their football season Aug. 30 boasting a strong team that has been itching to return to the field of battle after making it all the way to the CIF Semifinals in 2012. St. Monica edged-out hard-hitting teams in the playoffs such as Kern Valley and Boron to finish strong at 8-5 for the 2012 season. St. Monica Football Head Coach Adam Guerra said the Mariners have practiced hard in the off season and are ready for the upcoming 2013 football season.

St. Monica (28-7) girls basketball players have been awarded numerous honors for their play in the 2012-2013 basketball season with guard Briana Harris leading the team being named as CIF Division 4-A Player of the Year. Mariners girls basketball head coach John Skinner was named CIF Division 4-A Coach of the Year for his role in mentoring the girls through a season that saw the Mariners go 6-2 in the Camino Real League and go on to win the CIF Southern Section Crown.

It was the top of the third inning and the St. Monica (4-7) softball team was down 5-3 against Culver City (3-7) when Mariners Veronica Navarro bested Centaurs pitcher Jessica Faber by slapping an inside the park home run to make the game 5-4 at Veterans Memorial Park in Culver City Wednesday afternoon. Mariners Aliza Chacon got on base with a line drive grounder soon after and cautiously made her way to third base before she was hit in by Mariners Alyssa Gutierrez to tie the game 5-5. But that was as close as the Mariners would get to winning the game against the Centaurs who won the game 11-6.

St. Monica (28-7) was defeated by St. Bernard (28-8) in the CIF California State Girls Basketball Playoffs 75-51 with the Vikings gaining control of the game from the opening tip-off until the last basket at home Tuesday night. St. Monica all-league forward Melissa Maragnes and all-conference guard Briana Harris got into foul trouble early in the game limiting their playing time in the first half and played a large factor in the Mariners loss to the Vikings.

As if three victories weren't enough, St. Monica defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart 52-43 for the fourth time this season with guard Briana Harris scoring 30 points for the Mariners in the CIF State Playoffs win in front of a sellout crowd at home Saturday night. St. Monica Basketball Head Coach John Skinner said that the Mariners won for the fourth time because they were able to outpace the Cardinals in the second half. “It is tough to beat a well coached team four times and we were fortunate enough to do that," said Skinner.
