Saint Monica Catholic High School students Sarahi Ortiz and Kezia Setiawan are two of only nine female high school seniors to receive the Chick Evans Scholarship from The Western Golf Association’s Caddie Academy.

St. Monica Catholic High School students from Santa Monica used the Disneyland Resort as a classroom on Feb. 19 when they participated in the Disney Youth Education Series “Creating a Leadership Legacy” at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim.

St. Monica High School football program has a new coach. Well, sort of. Drew Shaw, a math teacher at the school, is now carrying top billing as head football coach at the school. Shaw replaced Adam Guerra, who moved on to coach another program.

St. Monica softball coach Joey Carrillo has his team playing at a high level right now. In fact, the Mariners are undefeated entering their Camino Real League matchup against an elite squad.

It's showtime for the local schools engaging in the postseason. The real season is here. And its time to get this party started as some would say. Boys and girls basketball teams are in play this week, beginning tonight.

St. Monica boys basketball team bounced back from the drubbing it took at Cathedral with a 74-54 victory Feb. 10 over Mary Star of the Sea to improve to 15-10 overall and 6-3 in league play on the season.

The St. Monica boy's basketball team began the week on a positive note, defeating Camino Real League rival St. Paul, 74-38 on Wednesday. The week concluded with a not so happy ending as the Mariners fell to Cathedral, 87-44.

Senior Dennis Ashley continues to light up the scoreboard for the St. Monica boys basketball team this season. Ashley has been on a tear of late, scoring over 20 points in multiple games.

It was a good week for the St. Monica boys’ basketball team. The Mariners went 2-0 in games against St. Paul and Bosco tech to up open up Camino Real League play. Behind a huge scoring performance by Dennis Ashley, St. Monica easily defeated Bosco Tech with a 64-44 win.

St. Monica boys basketball coach John Skinner starts his days early and ends it late. Balancing coaching with his duties as a real estate agent, Skinner is forced to use all of his time in the day wisely.

Basketball league play is finally here. Unfortunately for the St. Monica boys basketball team that means hitting the road. St. Monica’s Camino Real League schedule has the Mariners matching up against Bosco Tech and St. Paul at away games for the first two contests.

The St. Monica boys’ basketball team is on a roll these days. Well, at least through the holiday break. The Mariners Big Three in Spencer Gorman, Dennis Ashley and Kavin Dotson continue show their worth to the team game in and game out.

Usually, Christmas break is a time to get full from all the food you eat during the holidays. That is not so with high school basketball players. Tournaments galore abound during this festive time. It is no different for local basketball teams. A day after Christmas, St. Monica found itself back in the swing of things on the basketball court.

St. Monica used a balanced offense to defeat Providence in a nonleague boys’ basketball game on Saturday. The Mariners received double-digit scoring from four players to edge the Pioneers, 66-62, at Providence High School.

So far the St. Monica boys’ basketball team is having an up and down season. Playing in their own St. Monica Tournament and the El Segundo Hoops Classic Tournament proved no different for the Mariners. One game they play lights out basketball.

The St. Monica girls’ basketball team has been on a roll lately. That’s a good thing for the Mariners and their head coach Kelly Evans. After rolling out three straight wins at the South East Winter Classic, the Mariners went out and defeated four tough opponents at the St. Monica Classic Tournament.
