A dedication ceremony will be held this Sunday to celebrate the renaming of Stadium Court at Christine Emerson Reed Park to Gussy Moran Stadium Court.

Storylines were aplenty within the tennis world this week as Wimbledon took center stage in London, with highly ranked superstars Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Maria Sharapova eliminated from the world-famous tournament in the early rounds as well as an off-the-court cold war battle between the aforementioned Sharapova and Serena Williams.

SMC Duels Against Fullerton In California Community College Tennis Championships

SMC tennis stars Juliana Nelkin and Kaori Tsuda led the Corsairs by reaching the finals in the 2013 CCCAA individual playoffs to determine the California Community College State Champions beating Orange Coast College's Michelle Cyrus and Mia Hashimoto 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals at The Ojai in Ojai, Calif. But Nelkin and Tsuda lost to Sarah Anderson and Victoria Vo of Fullerton College in the doubles event finals.

SMC's Tsuda and Nelkin Defeat Magalhes and Bravo In 2013 WSC Doubles Championships

SMC doubles tennis team Kaori Tsuda and Juliana Nelkin defeated Santa Barbara's Bruna Magalhes and Nadya Bravo 6-2, 6-3 at the 2013 Western State Conference Championships in Ojai to earn the title of 2013 WSC Doubles Champions for the first time in SMC history Saturday afternoon. SMC tennis head coach Richard Goldenson said that Tsuda and Nelkin have been working hard to beat a doubles team that defeated them earlier in the season. "Team Tsuda/Nelkin had been beaten by team Magalhaes/Bravo earlier in the season," said Goldenson. "Since that match, Kaori and Julie have been working hard on their return game and net rushing. Yesterday, Julie and Kaori shifted into overdrive and took it to the next level."

SMC's Tsuda, Nelkin Qualify For WSC Women's Tennis Championships Finals

Santa Monica College tennis players Kaori Tsuda and Juliana Nelkin have qualified to play in the finals of the Western State Conference (WSC) Women's Tennis Championships scheduled to be played at 3:00 p.m. at Ventura College Friday, April 12. Tsuda beat Jackie Griffin in Round 16 6-2 and 6-0 while Nelkin beat Katy Scheck 6-0 and 6-0 in Round 16 of the 2013 WSC Championships Women's Singles.

Top-Ranked SMC Tennis Team Defeated By El Camino College

Santa Monica College (12-3) suffered a rare loss against South Coast Conference Champions El Camino College (15-1) losing most of the singles and doubles tennis matches by a score of 8-1 at the Ocean View Park tennis courts in Santa Monica Tuesday afternoon. Santa Monica College's number two singles tennis player Kaori Tsuda, an exchange student from Japan, said that the Corsairs are a good team and have the ability to go far in the playoffs regardless of the loss.

SMC sophomore Julianna Nelkin, shown in practice during the 2012 tennis season, is undefeated in the singles division and ranked number one in the doubles division in the Western State Schools Conference for the 2013 season.  As the Corsairs tennis captain, Nelkin has led team SMC to a number one ranking in Southern California.

Juliana Nelkin Leads SMC To Top Tennis Ranking

SMC tennis captain Juliana Nelkin is quickly gaining notoriety while rising through the ranks of the community college tennis world. She is currently undefeated in the singles division as well as being part of the top-ranked doubles tennis team in the Western State Conference. Under the leadership of Nelkin, the 2013 SMC tennis team is ranked number one in Southern California by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with an 11-1 overall record.

Crossroads Tennis beat Windward 9-9 (82-73) in the final match of the season to avenge an earlier loss against the Wildcats and give some closure for the Roadrunners who hope to have a solid seed in the first round of the upcoming playoffs.
