The heat relinquishing a bit serves as a reminder that this summer is coming to an end. Conclusively, so is this year’s annual Twilight Concert Series. Some remarkable acts have pleased crowds well into the thousands over the past couple of months. And pier-goers have been exposed to music from all walks of life.

The moon was nearly full on Thursday as two funk bands coaxed a party out of Pier-goers. Patrons howled out familiar tunes, and became part of the revelry as their thumping feet echoed off the break.

Two big band sounds were scheduled be showcased at the ninth and penultimate Twilight Concert of the summer this Thursday, Aug. 30. The spirit of New Orleans was planned to be brought to the stage by headliners Hot 8 Brass Band. However, Hurricane Isaac has forced Hot 8 Brass Band to cancel their planned appearance as six of the eight-man band are stranded in the Gulf region.

A slight sticky breeze and overcast sky couldn't hamper the heat of Thursday night's Twilight Concert Series. A faint smell of the sea, cilantro, rice, and beans filled the air. And hungry or not, people came out to dance.

With three concerts in the books and another seven to go, this summer’s Twilight Concert Series has had no problem catering to crowds in the thousands. After the beach-funk sounds of Donavon Frankenreiter, the soulful tunes of Jeff Young and the Song and Dance Society, reggae night featuring The LIONS and Arise Roots, and last Thursday night’s indie acts HAIM and Wildcat! Wildcat!, the pier will be presented with the Americana grace of Jackie Greene’s music.
