County Supports Veterans Exclusive Use Of Westwood VA Campus

The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday to show their support for a federal court ruling that the Department of Veterans Affairs cannot use land deeded to it for purposes other than veterans.

Groundbreaking Held For New Building Part Of West LA Veterans Affairs Medical Center

A groundbreaking ceremony for Building 209 on the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center was held Friday. In 2007, VA Secretary Jim Nicholson designated three buildings -- Buildings 205, 208, and 209 -- to be renovated for long-term therapeutic housing for homeless veterans, according to Rep. Henry A. Waxman.

Willie, a homeless Vietnam war veteran, lived outside the West Los Angeles VA last summer, when this picture was taken, though he has not been seen in the area for some months now.  An 1888 deed to provide a home for veterans initially established the property, which is today the largest VA campus in the country.  Some are challenging non-veteran-related uses of the land when Los Angeles County is the veteran homeless capital of America.

Veteran Robert Rosebrock (at podium) announced that he had filed suit against VA officials for interfering with his right to display the American flag upside down as a distress call to signify that the West Los Angeles VA property behind him was being endangered by VA policies.   Peter Eliasberg, managing attorney of the ACLU of Southern California, is representing Rosebrock.
