The Santa Monica High School athletic department has released details for tryouts for many of its sport programs. Student athletes interested in participating in football and want to try out for the sport, should come out June 30 until August 8.

Serafina King wasn’t too fond of getting into the swimming pool at an early age. In fact, King, who takes classes at Santa Monica High School, downright despised learning how to swim.

There are not too many schools that can balance a top-notch sports program with outstanding performances in the classroom as well. Crossroads has managed to do both exceptionally well. Crossroads placed three teams in first place in the CIF Southern Section-Ford Academic Awards, another five sports in second place, two sports in the third spot and two more in fourth. The Roadrunners had other sports place in the top ten.

St. Monica High School football program has a new coach. Well, sort of. Drew Shaw, a math teacher at the school, is now carrying top billing as head football coach at the school. Shaw replaced Adam Guerra, who moved on to coach another program.

Pacifica Christian High School's softball team has an up-and-down season so far during the 2014 campaign. However, standout Chandler Dolan has been the one steady constant for the Seawolves this season.

Sporting events remain the highest rated programs on all of television. But Michael King, founder and CEO of King Sports Worldwide, noticed a disparity within one of the numerous televised sporting events on today’s television programs.

After a couple of close losses, Crossroads baseball team got back in the win column Tuesday with a 3-2 win against Viewpoint. Crossroads took the lead in the in the bottom of the first inning, jumping out to a 1-0 lead.

Some local basketball players were named to the All-CIF Southern Section 2013-14 teams. From the Westside, it was Shanon Volpis from Pacifica Christian. When you have a player like Windward’s Jordin Canada on your side of town, it is easy to get overlooked.

UCLA recruit and Windward basketball star Jordin Canada is flying high these days. Canada, who led her team to the CIF Southern Section Open Division title against Mater Dei, is generally regarded as the top point guard in the country.

The Santa Monica-Malibu School District (SMMUSD) Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday night to incorporate boys and girls lacrosse into the curriculum at Santa Monica High School.

Things should be interesting down the stretch in the Alpha League when it comes to boys’ volleyball. Both Windward and Crossroads appear to have strong squads this season. It is showing up in league play.

St. Monica softball coach Joey Carrillo has his team playing at a high level right now. In fact, the Mariners are undefeated entering their Camino Real League matchup against an elite squad.

Crossroads School track and field boys and girls teams shined at a Delphic League meet that was conducted at Santa Monica College March 20. On the boys’ side, Crossroads recorded 167 points to outdistance runner-up Windward, which finished the meet with 78 points. Milken followed with 76 points, Viewpoint registered 45, and Sierra Canyon wrapped up the meet with 34 points.

The game wasn’t even close between the BYU Cougars and the North Carolina State Wolfpack. The BYU Cougars entered its first round NCAA women’s tournament game at Pauley Pavilion as the No. 12 seed going up against a powerful North Carolina State squad that was seeded fifth.

Big things are going on at Crossroads School. The sports program is flourishing this spring with an array of student-athletes shining in the spotlight for the Roadrunners. Swim phenom Zoe Darmon, a freshman at the school, has qualified for automatic CIF times in three individual races and has broken the school record in the 500 freestyle.

The top girls’ team in the land was one game away from the regional finals before Windward hit an Eagle road block. Etiwanda slipped past Windward 49-48, with good defense and an attacking offense that wouldn’t back down. USC-bound power forward Amy Okonkwo lead Eitwanda with 21 strong points.

Up next for the Windward girls basketball team is a run for the state title after demolishing Mater Dei for the CIF-Southern Section Open Division championship game on March 7. It's not too surprising that the Alpha League champs rolled the Monarchs in a 61-46 win.

There were a lot of things going on at the finish line of the 2014 Asics L. A. Marathon. But one of the least likely to get a lot of attention are the large number of folks lined up just outside the finish line there to greet and help out the runners when they make it across their final destination: the finish line.

Santa Monica native Julie Weiss will run to conquer cancer as a member of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team in the 118th Boston Marathon on April 21.

Santa Monica Little League has rescheduled its opening day for baseball to next Saturday, March 15. It was previously scheduled for March 1 but was canceled due to rain.

Kevin Kelsey's Pacifica Christian boys' basketball team struggled throughout the regular season, finishing fifth in the Liberty League. However, the Seawolves made it into the playoffs and came within a game of playing in the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA championship game.

It was great run for both the boys and girls basketball teams from Pacifica Christian. Too bad it all had to come to an abrupt end. Both teams enjoyed partial success in the postseason but came short of their ultimate goal of competing for a CIF title.

Santa Monica resident Sarah Kovacs will join 75 other athletes and coaches from Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) in New Jersey to compete in the 2014 USA Games being held on June 14-21, 2014.
