Congressman Henry Waxman on Tuesday said he sent a letter to Federal Aviation Association (FAA) Administrator Michael Huerta asking that the FAA participate in a forum in Santa Monica with local residents and the City of Santa Monica to discuss options for the future of the Santa Monica Airport (SMO).

The airport is currently operating under the Santa Monica Airport Agreement, a settlement agreement with the FAA that was established in 1984. The agreement will expire in 2015.

“The Santa Monica Airport is just feet from many homes in Santa Monica. For years, residents have had to live with safety, noise, and pollution issues at the airport,” said Waxman. “I share the concerns of the residents living around the airport and have been fighting for improvements for many years. The operating agreement with the FAA is due to expire in 2015, and the future of the airport is at a critical juncture. It’s time to start having frank conversation with the FAA about SMO post-2015. I am asking the FAA to participate in a forum to hear from local residents and the City about their priorities for the airport. “

Waxman said he has for years worked to improve airport safety and limit the impact of noise and pollution at the airport.

He said he has called on the FAA to expand the use of unleaded fuel to reduce lead emissions and to allow the City to establish meaningful noise limitations on aircraft takeoffs and landings and create a runway safety area on each side of the runway.

Waxman = Mr Letter Man. A letter about the PO closing, about the VA Buildings' usage for the homeless, about the subway, now the airport (and not for the first time) and on and on. But when does he DO anything beyond letters?

Impose 3 blade propels on high horsepower engines, no two bladed propellers; otherwise some will just make their two bladed propellers blat just to annoy people. Old Alaska pilot

Waxman is a cheap shill for the real estate developers who donate big money to his campaign. He only cares about building condos and office buildings on the airport land. Neighbors, be careful what you ask for because your little neighborhood is going to look just like downtown Santa Monica soon enough. Lots of traffic congestion, high rise buildings and, more auto pollution. You'll trade an airplane for a dozen cars. Don't believe the lies.

You have to wonder why any man would want to be a congressman for nearly 40 years. Oh wait, there is big money from lobbyists. I'm sure Waxman makes a very good living off lobbyists for middle income home owners in south Santa Monica. What do you mean they don't have a lobby? Now the guys who own corporate jets and live in north Santa Monica DO have lobbyists. They are bankers, real estate moguls, movie people....and Waxman can't afford to have them put their money against him. So he can draft a letter and twitch his molester mustache all he wants. The airport will still be there after 2015 because Daddy says so.
