Santa Monica police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred on Tuesday night. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward to help with their investigation.

SMPD Sgt. Jay Moroso said the incident occurred at approximately 9:15 pm at the intersection of 4th and Ashland Avenue.

He said the preliminary investigation indicated that a vehicle was traveling south on 4th Street and the vehicle struck a male pedestrian crossing in the crosswalk at Ashland.

“The pedestrian sustained a fracture to a leg and a broken shoulder,” Moroso said. “The injuries are not life threatening.”

Moroso said the preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect vehicle was described as an older black sedan with tinted windows.

“Investigators are working to find the vehicle and driver,” he said.

A witness told The Mirror they saw paramedics load the victim -- who looked like he was aged in his 40s -- onto a stretcher and he was conscious.

"He was not crying out in pain," the witness said. "Hopefully the injuries are not severe."

Anyone with information can call Detective Jason Olson at 310.458.8954 or the Santa Monica Communications Center (24 hours) at 310.458.8491.

Come to Santa Monica, a pedestrian friendly city! We've gone at least 48 hours without a hit and run so it's totally safe here. Yes the city encourages you to explore by foot just look both ways, maybe 3 or 4 times before crossing. We have a high density of self-entitled assholes living here so be watchful. Busy soccer moms enjoy talking on their hands free cells phone because they need the extra hand for their flask of vodka. Also be mindful for the many old timers who pay high insurances premiums so they can mow over whoever they want. Even our police force is happy to offer you assistance by pushing you through the intersection with their bumpers at a high rate of speed. Let's not forget to mention the Asians. It's a well known stereotype that proves itself time and again. But finally you can't have the best time in Santa Monica without being a clueless pedestrian yourself. The city recommends that you walk with your earbuds in and turned up to maximum. If you have a cell phone, only take calls while crossing busy intersections. We also recommend trying to stagger home drunk down a darkened street. If your a tourist, forget you're in a large metro area full of clueless people. There's a pretty good chance the drivers will see you jaywalking and swerve to avoid hitting you. A special thanks to the car insurance companies who have recognized these statistics and assure that all Santa Monicans pay higher than average premiums. Enjoy our pedestrian friendly city!
