Brenton Garen / Editor-in-Chief

Santa Monica police are searching for two African-American males who used pepper spray in a burglary at Cabochon Fine Jewelry at 1426 Montana at 1:25 p.m. Friday.

SMPD Sgt. Richard Lewis said the two suspects entered the store wearing gas masks and pepper sprayed all six people inside, of which two were employees.

Lewis said the suspects smashed several glass jewelery displays, fleeing with an unknown amount of jewelry last seen traveling southbound in Alley 14, between 14th and 15th Streets.

Paramedics with the Santa Monica Fire Department treated the six victims at the scene.

Lewis said the investigation is ongoing and did not have any further information on the descriptions of the suspects.

Sounds like a variation on a robbery technique that the Crips street gang has been using in Southern California for over twenty years. The gas masks make facial recognition more difficult when security camera footage is reviewed. The Pepper spray immobilizes the staff and permits a two-man crew to do what it used to take a squad of three or more to do. Even the bad guys let their tactics evolve. It's a good thing for us citizens that SMPD has both a long memory and a sense of doggedness that will likely see these yahoos locked up in due course!

Well good luck if you are a black man in Santa Monica right now. By the way, the use of "pepper spray" isn't a "Crip Gang" creation. That horrible act of violence has been used by ALL mafia in the world.

@L. McCann - my comment was based on the commercial investigation of many robberies at jewelry stores over a 35 plus year career as an insurance adjuster. It had nothing to do with race. It is a well-demonstrated fact that robberies of jewelers is a mainstay of the Crips street gang. In fact, such robberies were part of gang initiation for quite some time. Notice the use of the words "street gang" and not "street gang comprised of black men". Since the original comment did not play the race card, why must you?
