Santa Monica City Council Candidate Forum Tonight To Focus On Airport

Concerned Residents Against Airport Pollution (CRAAP) hold its fifth consecutive Santa Monica City Council Candidates Forum tonight, Sept. 13, with the focus solely on Santa Monica Airport and issues such as air pollution, noise, health, and safety.

The forum will take place at 6 p.m. inside the Santa Monica Business Park, just north of Santa Monica Airport, at 3250 Ocean Park Boulevard, Suite 160, Santa Monica, 90405 (parking lot entrance from 31st Street).

All 15 Santa Monica City Council Candidates, including two incumbents, vying for four open seats have been invited to participate.

The candidates will have the opportunity to make an opening and closing statement.

Martin Rubin, Director of CRAAP, will moderate the forum.

“As we approach 2015, Santa Monica voters are very interested in what will be the City’s stance on the future of the 227 acres that are now Santa Monica Airport,” Rubin told The Mirror. “This election as well as the 2014 election for the remaining three Council seats will determine the makeup of the Council responsible for making the important decisions regarding SMO and directing City Staff to carry out their directives.”

The forum is free and open to the public. There will be free on-site parking with validation.

Beware of Developers said...

CRAaP is nothing but an astro turf front for wealthy real estate developers bent on conning the public into closing a valuable asset so they can build mega structures on the land. This forum is one-sided and completely biased against the airport. They are buying and bullying the SM city council to push their agenda. They use phoney data, lies and intimidation to force their point.

Martin Ruben should recuse himself as "moderator, since his brother is a candidate. At the 2010 CRAAP Forum, Rubin was late and gave a long speech about himself. When time was running short he allowed some candidates to go on and on, preventing other candidates from wrapping up.

Jerry Rubin (candidate) is Martin Rubin's brother. This is a rigged forum and a rigged election. Don't be fooled by these professional politicos trying to force you to believe the airport is dangerous or bad. It is a vital part of the SM economy and community. Nearly every city of our size has an airport because it's an asset. These guys want to push their closure agenda so they can let their developer friends come in and build more strip malls and condos on that land.

As attorney for the Santa Monica Airport Association, I filed an action in the early 1970s in the Federal District Court when Santa Monica attempted to ban jets, helicopters, etc. Santa Monica lost and the decision was upheld on appeal. Santa Monica cannot regulate the use by aircraft of the airport as that is the sole jurisdiction of the FAA. Further, at the end of WWII the Federal Government returned the airport to the City on the condition that it be maintained as an airport "in perpetuity". "In perpetuity" means forever unless the FAA decides otherwise - not the City.
