Striving for Excellence: New Pilot Program and Senior Student Highlight Schools’ Achievement

By Sebastian Lopez

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has launched an Early Learning Pathway pilot program at three campuses this fall.

Seaside Preschool and Bridges Transitional Kindergarten opened at Edison Language Academy and Grant Elementary and Bridges opened Juan Cabrillo Elementary School, with Seaside opening in 2017. The Early Learning Pathways program’s goals are to foster relationships between families, community educators, limit transitions from school to school for the youngest students and ensure kindergarten readiness. The program is supportive of the district’s Excellence through Equity plan and additional schools will be added to the program in the next few years.

Additionally, Jacob Hammersly, 17, a senior at Santa Monica High School and a graduate of Will Rogers Elementary School and John Adams Middle School, will be honored at the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce’s 22nd Annual New Heroes Celebration for his contributions and outstanding work in the community.

Hammersly has volunteered by working to install low-water landscaping at Mt. Olive Church, repairing and rebuilding musical instrument storage facilities at SamoHi, renovating the play yard at the University Parent’s Nursery School and more.

Hammersly is a Senior Staff lead of Boy Scout Troop 2, was nominated to represent SamoHi as a delegate to the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists Congress at the University of Massachusetts and is a member of the elite orchestra performing at the California All-State Music Education Conference in San Jose, CA.
