Two Samohi Students To Take Part In Inaugural National Youth Orchestra:

Santa Monica High School students, senior Eli Brown (trumpet) and junior Ryan Roberts (oboe), have been chosen to participate in the Inaugural National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America.

In the summer of 2013, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute will launch the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, an opportunity for the finest young players from around the nation to come together with their peers, a faculty of leading orchestral musicians, and a world-class conductor for an intensive two-week residency followed by a tour.

NYO-USA will shine a light on the extraordinary talent of young American instrumentalists, showcasing the vibrancy and diversity of this group and offering each participant a life-changing musical and cultural experience.

As a member of NYO-USA between June 30 and July 23, 2013, the students will work with orchestra director James Ross and principal players from some of America’s top orchestras during a residency at Purchase College in Purchase, New York.

The participating musicians will be taught and mentored by a “dream team” of first-chair players from the most celebrated American orchestras. They will then embark on a sensational tour with maestro Valery Gergiev, Principal Conductor of the London Symphony, and violin soloist Joshua Bell, traveling to Washington, DC, St. Petersburg, Moscow, and London.

While abroad, these outstanding students will represent both Santa Monica and the United States, while engaging in the kind of cultural exchange that is only possible through the universal language of music.

Carnegie Hall gratefully acknowledges National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America Founding Patrons Joan and Sanford I. Weill and the Weill Family Foundation.
