Southern California Edison today restored power to more than 900 Santa Monica customers after a power surge set off an explosion in an underground vault, triggering an outage.
Edison’s website indicated that as of 3 a.m. no customers were affected by the outage.
The explosion was reported about 9:45 p.m. Sunday at Ocean Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica Fire Department Capt. Dan Caldwell said.
“There was a power surge in a downtown power vault and it caused an explosion,” Caldwell said. But there was no fire, he said.
The bulk of the outage was in the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Ocean Avenue and the 1100 block of Second Street, Caldwell said.
Edison’s website indicated that 949 customers were affected as of 11:25 p.m. Sunday.
