A 66-year-old Marina del Rey woman was arrested for public intoxication in the early morning hours of July 4, but had the charge of battery added after she tried to kick a police officer who was trying to arrest her.

At 12:05 am officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the area of 20th Street and Santa Monica Boulevard after they had been informed that a suicidal woman was appearing to be attempting to wind up her mortal coil by being struck by oncoming traffic.

When the officers arrived they conferred with members of the Santa Monica Fire Department (who were already at the scene) who told them that the woman was exceptionally intoxicated and unable to take care of herself at that time.

The officers then questioned the intoxicated woman and she told them that she did not want to get hurt.

The officers made the decision that the woman would be best served if she was taken into custody so they arrested her for public intoxication.

The officers placed her into handcuffs and as they were doing so the intoxicated woman tried to kick one of them.

This added the charge of battery on a police officer to her aforementioned drunk in public allegation.

Bail for this woman was set at $20,000.
