Santa Monica Place brings #tbt to a whole new level as the center presents Sun Sand Sea, a collection of vintage photographs of Santa Monica from the 1920’s to the 1950’s. The pop-up gallery will be on display at Santa Monica Place from June 3 – July 3and features more than 40 vintage photographs that explore the relationship between the sea, the sand and the people who have visited, worked, played and enjoyed Santa Monica and Venice. The exhibit’s Grand Opening event will take place on June 5 ;at Santa Monica Place in the Sun Sand Sea gallery located on Level 1 near Bloomingdale’s. The Grand Opening and exhibit are free to the public and will include a live painting by Hueman, which will be large-scale, hand-embellished murals and lifeguard stand art installations. The live painting will take place on June 5from10 am-4pm.

“The five-mile stretch of beach that separates Venice and Santa Monica is one of the world’s most iconic beaches and travel destinations, where millions of people have enjoyed and contributed to its culture,” said Shoshana Puccia, Senior Manager, Marketing, Santa Monica Place. “Sun, Sand Sea truly captures the history and feeling of the 30-year span, and we are thrilled to present the exhibition to our community, visitors and customers.”

In addition, internationally-renowned artist Hueman will create a large scale hand-embellished murals and lifeguard stand art installation. Hueman’s large scale reproductions will be of several of the original vintage photos from the exhibit and she will hand embellish them with urban contemporary eye-catching color using aerosol and acrylic paints. The murals will be hung in windows along 4th Street. Hueman will also customize two life-size life guard towers, which will feature reproductions of the vintage photos from the gallery.

“I’m a fan of vintage photography and artifacts from years past; they provide a snapshot into the life and culture of a singular moment in time. And, as an artist who enjoys working with opposing elements, I’m looking forward to bringing hits of color to these monochromatic images, creating a vibrant mashup of the old and new,” said Hueman.

Santa Monica Place is working with Branded Arts, who will create the pop-up gallery space and oversee the multiple unique art activations.

“Born and raised in Santa Monica, I am so honored to participate in such a unique project as this and honor the history of Santa Monica,” said Warren Brand, President, Branded Arts. “I look forward to bringing this exhibit to a new generation in a fun and exciting way through contemporary art.”

ABOUT HUEMAN Allison Torneros, who paints under the moniker ‘Hueman’, received her degree in Design | Media Arts from UCLA in 2008. She often draws on the human condition to create colorful mash-ups of the abstract and figurative, and the beautiful and grotesque. Hueman’s unique freestyle process involves creating tightly refined compositions from a spontaneous beginning of paint splashes, drips, and sprays. Through this method she is interested in creating motion and dimension on flat, two-dimensional surfaces, and her layered works can be seen on public walls and in galleries worldwide. Her work has caught the attention of media outlets and publications such as Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, CNN, the History Channel, Complex, and the LA Times. Hueman was declared ad one of the most fascinating Angelenos in 2014 by LA Weekly.
