Thinking Shakespeare at SMC:

Some scholars claim that there was no William Shakespeare. Others, specifically Yale’s Harold Bloom, believe that Shakespeare literally invented human beings.

Stage director Barry Edelstein will present his perspective in a master class, “Thinking Shakespeare,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7 at the Hangar Stage, located at SMC’s Airport Campus, 2800 Airport Ave., Santa Monica.

Well-known for his direction of Shakespeare’s plays, Edelstein recently spent several seasons as artistic director of New York’s Classic Stage Company and has taught Shakespeare at the Julliard School, New York University’s Graduate Acting Program, and the Public Theater’s “Shakespeare Lab.”

Master classes are free and open to the public, and seating is on a first-arrival basis.

“Thinking Shakespeare” is the third in the new Master Class Series sponsored by SMC’s Theatre Arts Department and the SMC Associates, a private organization that funds speakers and special programs on campus. For information, call (310) 434-4319.
