The storied Dodgers and Yankees might be mired in the standings in the Big Leagues but not in the Rustic Canyon youth baseball league where the Dodgers and Yankees will vie for the spring season championship this coming Saturday at 12:30 pm.
In last weekend’s play, the Dodgers advanced to the final by defeating the Phillies 12-7. The Yankees defeated the Red Sox 8-5 to win their berth in the championship game. The Phillies will meet the Sox at 10 a.m. Saturday in the consolation game.
It has been a good year for the Rustic Canyon league. Among other things, Jamie Montgomery, head coach of the Yankees, arranged fot a professional landscaping team to renovate the playing field.
There are many fine youth baseball leagues in the vicinity of Santa Monica. Rustic Canyon is notable as a low-key, child-friendly league that welcomes all comers ages 9-12, including both boys and girls, and it just might be the most picturesque “field of dreams” west of the Mississippi.
A facility of the City of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation, the park is deep in Santa Monica Canyon. Its main building is a quaint, Spanish style structure that dates back to the 1930s.In addition to the ball field, Rustic Canyon also boasts tennis courts, indoor and outdoor basketball courts and a public swimming pool that will open for the summer on June 25. The summer activities calendar, including youth camps and scores of other activities, is now available. A summer addition is a youth volleyball clinic for children 9-14 on Saturdays.
