Abbot Kinney founded, or more accurately, conjured Venice, and co-founded Ocean Park. The two communities are neighbors, and it’s quite possible to pass out of one and into the other without knowing it. AK (after Kinney), Venice was annexed by Los Angeles, and Ocean Park became part of Santa Monica, but both have managed to maintain their own distinctive styles. On Sunday, Venice’s 100th birthday celebration got off to a fast start with Carnavale, while Main Street celebrated the summer solstice with an all-day festival. One day, two celebrations, only six or seven blocks apart, but decidedly different, as can be seen in these photographs by Margaret Molloy.
