$31 Million Allocated for Wetlands Restoration:

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has allocated $31 million to wetlands restoration in the harbor and Ballona areas.

“I am excited that the port has made the commitment to help restore saltwater marshes along our coasts,” Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Venice) said. “The commissioners and the mayor understand that environmental protection and economic development are not mutually exclusive.”

Two years ago, Harman secured $100,000 in federal funds for an Army Corps of Engineers study of ecosystem restoration of the Lower Ballona Creek region. The study is now in the feasibility phase.“We’re not able to create new coastline,” Harman said. “Either we protect it or we lost it.”
