Cars Returned to the Pier Last Friday:

Following a month-long shutdown, during which crews restored the Santa Monica Pier;s wooden deck and upgraded its substructure, the pier and its parking lot reopened to vehicular traffic on Friday, December 16.

With the completion of the work, the Pier now has a 40,000-pound bearing load from the bridge to the Playland Arcade.

The turnaround area was included in the upgrade so that Santa Monica Fire Department rigs can make a three-point turnaround and drive out head first to Ocean Avenue.Steel plates will remain on the Pier deck beyond the arcade until the final phase of the upgrade work is completed in 2006.
