The Edythe L. and Eli Broad Center at UCLA designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects, who did the Getty Center, is scheduled to open to the public on May 20, 2006.
Opening activities will include exhibitions of works by artists who are on the faculty in the UCLA Department of Art and the Department of Design | Media Arts. A newly commissioned sculpture, an untitled torqued ellipse by Richard Serra, will be unveiled at the opening.
The Broads donated $23.2 million toward the construction of a new complex at UCLA that will provide modern, state-of-the-art facilities for the visual arts programs of the School of the Arts and Architecture (UCLArts). It will house the department of art, the department of design | media arts and the New Wight Gallery.
The members of the art faculty whose works will be shown at the opening include John Baldessari, Jennifer Bolande, Barbara Drucker, Roger Herman, Mary Kelly, Paul McCarthy (emeritus), Catherine Opie, Lari Pittman, Charles Ray, Adrian Saxe, James Welling and Patty Wickman.
The exhibition will also include works by department of design | media arts faculty members Rebecca Allen, Mark Hansen, Erkki Huhtamo, Robert Israel, Rebeca Méndez, Christian Moeller, C.E.B. Reas, Jennifer Steinkamp, Vasa Mihich and Victoria Vesna.The Broads’ own collection of art is housed in a onetime GTE building in Santa Monica.
