An emergency escape chute has been installed on the south side of the west end of the Santa Monica Pier. In an emergency, such as a fire on the pier, that prevents people from leaving the pier via the usual exits, they could be quickly removed via the chute into a boat. The chute will remain in place until a more permanent device, such as a gangway, is constructed as part of a future pier upgrade. In-service training of the pier Harbor Guards and Fire Department personnel was held last week. On Thursday, they staged a demonstration of the chute for City officials, deploying personnel into a waiting boat.
