It was opening day last Saturday for the Rustic Canyon Spring Hardball League and the A’s stood at attention along the third baseline for the National Anthem during pre-game ceremonies. Last in line was Number 22, eight-year-old rookie Cameron Schiffer, the youngest player in the league. Cameron attends Marquez Elementary School. He drew a walk his second time at bat and worked his way around the bases to score the tying run against the Rustic Angels.

It was a good day for the Schiffers’. Cameron’s teammate and older brother, Cody, hit the league’s first home run of the season, a booming shot over the right field fence. The A’s bested the Angels 8-4 and notched their first win of ’06 for Manager (and dad) Doug Schiffer.

In Saturday’s other game, the Rustic Indians beat the Dodgers 7-6 in a real thriller, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the final inning.
