Santa Monica Coalition Wants Brakes On Parking:

The Santa Monica Coalition for a Livable City (SMCLC) is fighting to keep downtown parking under control. The group is attempting to get the City Council to reduce the number of new proposed parking spots for downtown Santa Monica. SMCLC is concerned that a large increase in parking spaces will allow for too much additional commercial development, putting additional strains on Santa Monica’s resources, included increased traffic.

Councilmember Kevin McKeown told the Mirror, “Those extra thousand parking spaces require me to sign off on the supposed need generated by half a million square feet of previously undiscussed downtown commercial development. We’re in the middle of public process on a new Land Use Element, and with the community stabbing for the brakes, the Council shouldn’t be revving the engine.”
