Ask Dr. Mao:

Question: How can I cure my high blood pressure and quit taking the three dangerous medications for lowering it?

Answer: Hypertension is a complicated condition and often dangerous. Do not stop taking the prescribed medications from your primary care physician; instead, discuss with him/her the possibility of adjunctive treatment with acupuncture and Chinese herbal prescriptions. There are many treatment modalities for high blood pressure. Depending on the type and severity of your condition, a licensed TCM doctor will be able to accurately diagnose and prescribe a treatment protocol. From a dietary perspective I recommend the following:

Avoid smoking, alcohol, spicy foods, coffee and other stimulants. Reduce or eliminate fatty or fried foods, salty foods, stress and constipation, avoid potatoes, pork, MSG, baking soda and diet soft drinks with Aspartame (artificial sweetener). Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) should also be avoided.

Incorporate more celery, spinach, garlic, bananas, sunflower seeds, honey, tofu, mung beans, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, hawthorn berries, plums, lotus root and chrysanthemum. Vitamin supplements, including omega 3 oils and vitamin C, are also recommended. Take garlic oil capsules to clean out the arteries. Drink hawthorn berry and chrysanthemum tea. Eat three green apples per day.

I also recommend Tai Chi or Qi Gong Exercises as they have been shown to help regulate metabolism and glandular function.

Question: Can taking birth control for an extended period of time (more than 20 years) affect my fertility?

Answer: Birth control pills are an artificial induction of infertility to your body. The female body functions have a specific programming to procreate and therefore produce the necessary monthly cycles. It is unnatural to force the body to stop these cycles, and by changing the hormonal patterns within the body we are, in essence, reprogramming our body. The longer the period, the harder it becomes for the body to recover its original programming. This reprogramming does have adverse effects on your fertility, more severe in some than other cases. Generally it will take six to nine months before a healthy body can remember its original programming and return to its natural state. Consult your natural practitioner to determine the best way to help reprogram your body in preparation for conception.
