As expected, the Republicans in the Senate defeated the bill to withdraw troops from Iraq. The all-night debate held July 17-18 resulted in a vote of 52-47, eight votes short of the needed 60.
Anti-war protesters took to the streets across the nation in what were called “Counter-Filibusters.” Locally, concerned citizens young and old, even former soldiers, expressed their First Amendment rights at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Ocean Avenue.
