On the Beach

Saturday, January 19 at Midnight – 1600 block of the Beach – Officers responded to a call of a bleeding man, the possible victim of an assault. When the officers located the man, he was bleeding from his nose and had blood on his face. He said he had been on the beach with three or four friends when one of the “friends” attacked him from behind with a stick or bat. When the attack stopped, a second “friend” told him that if he contacted the police, they knew a lot of people who would take care of him. He then walked to the bike path, where a good Samaritan saw him and called police. The responding officers put out a description of the “friends” and other officers detained suspects in the 100 block of Broadway. The victim identified the man who had hit him and the man who had threatened him, and they were arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and witness intimidation, respectively.

In the Park

Tuesday, January 22 at 9:30 a.m. – 1500 block of Palisades Park -– A mother and daughter were walking by the railing with their small dog on a leash. As they walked by a man smoking in the park, he started yelling at them and tried to kick them and the dog. They walked to the police substation on the Pier, reported the incident, and gave a description of the man. Officers located him smoking a cigarette in violation of the outdoor smoking ordinance. Although the man claimed that the mother and daughter had bothered him and denied assaulting them, he was arrested on a citizens arrest for assault and for violation of the outdoor smoking ordinance.

At the Office

Sunday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m. – 3300 block of Pico Boulevard – A woman went to the place of business where she had been working to pick up her final paycheck. The manager invited her to come into the office in the back for the check, where he inappropriately touched her breast. She told him to leave her alone, snatched up the check from the desk, and left. She reported the incident the next day. After follow-up investigation, police arrested the manager for sexual assault.

In the Store

Wednesday, January 23 at 3:30 p.m. – Active Store at 1460 4th Street – Two men entered the store and one engaged the lone sales clerk in distracting conversation while the other lifted a Nixon watch from the sales rack and then left. The conversationalist then left. The clerk then noticed the watch missing from the rack, ran out to the sidewalk, and saw the two men walking away as one displayed the watch to the other. The clerk telephoned police with a description, and officers detained the men at 5th Street and Broadway. One of them was wearing the watch and admitted to stealing it. He was arrested for grand theft (over $400), and his buddy was arrested for conspiracy.
